We have all heard some kind of expression like butterflies spreading their wings and flying or about the change that a caterpillar goes through to become a butterfly. That’s why I decided to use a picture of a butterfly. Hopefully to encourage you to spread your wings or to not be afraid of change.
Au pairing is not just for anyone. It’s not for someone that doesn’t like kids. It’s not for someone that doesn’t like adventure. Au pairing teaches a person so much. I’ve learned how to be more patient and much more about how to handle a child when they have tantrums. Au pairing also helped me learn more words and get comfortable in another lifestyle. I got to learn new traditions and learn more about a religion that I only knew little about.
Au pairing opened the world to me.
I have always wanted to see the world.
If that’s what you want to do too, then au pair. Your experience won’t be the same as mine. We are two very different people and host families are all also very different. If you see yourself living away from home for a year, you love children, you adapt well and you are very open minded, I suggest you try au pairing.
Pros: Free room and board, food, pocket money, getting to see new places, living in a new country, making loads of new friends from different countries and if you are lucky, making little best buddies for life.
Cons: Being far away from your family, the money you get isn’t much, taxes (in the USA), hard work and having to say goodbye to your little best buddies when your au pair year(s) ends.
I loved au pairing in the USA, I’m planning on doing it again in another country.
I found it to be a very life changing, liberating experience.
