Curly Haired Girly: Part 1
When I was 8/9 years old, I did a bad thing.
Really Bad…
I never liked my curly hair when I was younger. It tangled too much and was fairly unmanageable. Products for curly hair wasn’t as prevalent and if it was, I wasn’t sure my single mother could even think about it,as many other things took preference.
I loved for my hair to be straight and silky smooth, but that could only happen with a blow out. A blow out that cost money and was non essential. The only time I felt good about my curls was when my uncle said I looked like Michael Jackson. That made me proud to have curls. Other times I did not want them. I wanted straight hair!
So my mother got married and we moved out. We rented a house and in the yard there was another family. The lady had 2 daughters and one son. The son a year older than my younger brother. One daughter a year younger than me and the other one a few years younger than me.The lady and my mother became the best of friends. We all clicked right away. Two houses, one yard, one family.
As I was saying, my hair was curly and I didn’t know how to manage it. My mother always did my hair. She understood it. I always cried when she combed or brushed it ( there was photo evidence and it disappeared. My mother says I made it disappear, but I swear I did not). She always says I was over dramatic. I was not. My mother was not the one that’s hair was being combed/brushed.
Thank goodness for the products that are out there today. Detangle spray, detangle combs, co wash, etc. Not that my curls look good, I am extremely lazy sometimes when it comes to my hair and I really have to focus on not letting it damage any further. I would like to follow the curly girl method but sometimes I really also like my hair straight. I have to do some more research on it too.
So back to the new family that we met. Like all the mothers I knew, the lady also did her daughters’ hair herself. One girl had curly hair like mine and the other one’s hair was straight. The kind of straight I would like my hair to be. Then I found out how they got it straight…
… to be continued
